TABLESCAPE
a decorative arrangement on a table, often including tableware, centerpieces, and other elements to enhance its appearance for an event or occasion.
A beautifully crafted tablescape allows you to level up your dinner party, express your personal style, and get your creative juices flowing. The options are endless when deciding how you want to arrange or compose your centerpiece, place settings and decorations to create the perfect ambiance for any occasion or just because! Here are some steps, tricks and tips to tablescape like a pro!
SET THE VIBE
A special event not only gives the perfect excuse to celebrate, but can give inspiration. When throwing a party, pick an overall theme and curate a Pinterest board to guide your tablescape design. Additionally, consider who your guests are and the atmosphere you hope to create. Select a color scheme that sets the mood or relates to the occasion. Different colors evoke different emotions. Warmer hues (red, orange, yellow) can elicit energy, passion, happiness. The color red stimulates appetite. Orange adds a playful, energetic vibe that is fun for outdoor events. Yellow brightens up spaces and creates an inviting atmosphere. Cooler colors (blues, greens, purples) instill calmness, harmony, luxury. The color blue promotes relaxation and communication. Green has a rejuvenating effect, making it ideal for garden parties or outdoor parties. Purple signifies luxury and can add a touch of elegance for formal events, like weddings or cocktail parties. Neutral colors (whites, grays, browns) evoke balance, simplicity, cleanliness. You can choose to stick to one kind of hue or mix contrasting colors for a vibrant look.
IRON OUT THE DETAILS AND GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES
To help organize the space and what materials you’ll need, create a list of how many guests will be attending and what you will be serving. Basics to add to your list are dishes, silverware, charger plates, glasses, napkins, and a runner and/or tablecloth. Some of these you may already have on hand to mix and match with new pieces! Then you’ll want to consider your centerpiece and decorative accents. Decor can include candlesticks, candles, glassware, serveware, flowers, branches, greenery and any seasonal elements.
SET THE TABLE
First choose your tablecloth or runner to set the base of your tablescape. If you are using cloth of any kind, steam or iron it before placing it on the table. Then create the centerpiece! Spread out and arrange your decorative objects by using varying heights, textures, and colors to add dimension. If you’re not sure where to begin, try adhering to the “rules of threes,” aiming for three candleholders, three different types of flowers, three colors, etc. Be mindful not to obstruct guests’ views or impede conversation. Once the centerpiece is set, add decorative accents around the table like petals, confetti, candles, or tea lights.
CREATE YOUR PLACE SETTINGS
Start by laying down the charger or placemat, followed by the plate. Then, add any additional items required for serving the meal. Napkins can be placed on top of the plates, secured with a napkin ring, and utensils can be arranged casually or wrapped within the napkin. To add an extra special detail, include personalized place tags for each of your guests.
